| Why I RideMy cycling story ramped up in 1988 when I began mountain biking recreationally. A year later, I entered my first race at Grant Ranch. I think I finished after the finish line was taken down and I placed 2nd out of 2 beginners...but I was hooked. I moved to the Sacramento area in 1994, and started riding with a group that knew many of the outlying areas (Grass Valley, Nevada City, Auburn, Downieville). As luck would have it, I was hired for a junior high teaching position in Grass Valley in 1997. I immediately started a junior high mountain bike club ( the UHMBC: Union Hill Mountain Bike Club) which is still going strong today. Our club actually helped spawn the Miners Indie high school mountain bike team, which I also help coach, and has won the NorCal League Championship numerous years.
I have raced expert for about 17 years, with a few notable finishes. I finished 5th at the 2002 Single Speed World championships in Downieville. I also have been top 5 for the last 3 years at the national championships in my age class with a 2nd place finish in 2007.
As much as I love racing, the 2 most important things in my life are my 5 year old son, Gavin, and 3 year old fireball of a daughter, Chloe. They make my life worth living. Everytime I win a medal or trophy, it becomes part of their collection in their room. My son actually parades around wearing and carrying all of them sometimes! By this time next year, I hope my son will be parading a stars and stripes jersey, also.
